The tin anniversary marks the milestone of 10 years of marriage.

Wedding anniversaries have names that symbolize the years spent together. Many people will have heard of the first anniversary as paper, the fifth as wood, the 25th as silver and the 50th as gold.

And the 10th wedding anniversary is known as the tin anniversary.

Looking back, 10 years may seem like a long time, even if they felt as though they passed in an instant while you were living them.

Alongside the happy moments, there may have been changes in circumstances, work, parenting and everyday life that did not go as planned. Yet you have supported one another and found your way through those 10 years, gradually adapting along the way.

The tin anniversary is an occasion to look back on the time you have shared and renew your appreciation for the years still to come.

Why is the 10th wedding anniversary associated with tin?

Tin is a soft, pliable metal that is easy to work.

It changes shape under pressure but does not break easily. These qualities have come to represent a couple who have adapted flexibly to each other’s thoughts and lives as they move forward together.

Two people who began married life with different rhythms and values gradually come to understand one another through their daily lives, finding a form that feels comfortable for them both.

Rather than only one person changing, they shape their life together through conversation and, at times, compromise.

I think this softness and flexibility are the meaning held in tin as a material.

After 10 years together, you may realize that you did not understand each other perfectly from the start, but have built your relationship little by little.

The tin anniversary is not only about a grand celebration.

“Thank you for these 10 years.”

“Here’s to the years ahead.”

It is a day that offers a chance to put into words the feelings that can be difficult to express in everyday life.

The appeal of tin

Tin is a metal that has long been used for tableware, drinking vessels and decorative objects.

It has a quiet white glow, close to silver, yet a warmth to its character. Although it is metal, it does not feel overly cold, and it sits naturally alongside materials such as leather, wood and cloth.

New tin reflects light softly, with a bright but gentle glow.

Over time, small scratches and a little dulling gradually accumulate, giving it a more subdued character.

The time spent using it remains in its appearance.

In that sense, it is much like the patina of leather.

The oils from your hands, light and friction deepen leather’s color and increase its sheen. Tin, too, takes on the time spent with its owner, developing a character that is never exactly the same as another piece.

Keeping something in a new condition is not the only way to care for it.

The scratches and changes in color that come from daily use are part of the life of the person who owns it.

An anniversary gift can be used for five or 10 years, changing in appearance alongside those years.

Perhaps tin is chosen for a tin anniversary not only because of the anniversary’s name, but also because it is a material that lets us appreciate the beauty of time passing.

Bluno’s tin parts are cast one by one in our atelier

At Bluno, we make the tin parts for our leather goods at our Chigasaki atelier.

We melt the tin, pour it into a mold, remove it once it has cooled and set, then refine the shape of each piece individually.

With leather goods, attention often turns to cutting and sewing the leather. At Bluno, making the metal components with our own hands is also important to us.

“If the part we want doesn’t exist, we’ll make it ourselves.”

That is the thought that first led us to cast tin.

The surface of tin changes slightly depending on the pouring temperature, the condition of the mold and the way it cools.

Unlike uniformly finished industrial products, every piece has small differences, even when cast in the same mold.

Those subtle variations are part of the appeal of something made by hand.

Both our Italian leather and our tin are materials whose character changes with time.

Vegetable-tanned leather deepens in color, develops a sheen and grows familiar in the hand with use.

Tin does not change dramatically in color, but small scratches accumulate and its luster gradually becomes more subdued.

Though different materials, both hold the passage of time and become tools that belong uniquely to their owner.

We combine leather and tin for more than their visual compatibility.

We believe they settle naturally together in one product because both become more complete through years of use.

A tin anniversary gift for everyday life

When thinking of an anniversary gift, many people may picture jewelry, tableware or a bouquet of flowers.

Of course, things displayed or admired on a special day have their own meaning.

At Bluno, we also believe that things which become a natural part of daily life make fitting anniversary gifts.

A wallet, key case or business card holder used every day.

Something you pick up when heading out, or notice in an ordinary moment.

Because it is part of daily life, it can remind you of the day it was given and the words that came with it.

For a 10th anniversary, a couple might choose leather goods in different colors.

Rather than having exactly the same thing, each person can choose the color they like, with the tin parts making a subtle connection between them.

I think that is a lovely choice for a couple who have moved forward while respecting one another, without needing to make everything match.

It can also be lovely to choose something as a keepsake for yourself, not only as a present for your partner.

Alongside thanking the person who has walked with you for 10 years, you can also acknowledge your own efforts during that time.

A gift for a milestone can help us look back and approach the life ahead with a little more hope.

It begins to develop when you start using it

At Bluno, we do not see the moment a product is finished as the end.

It passes into a customer’s hands, becomes part of everyday life, and gradually gathers scratches and sheen.

That is where a new stage of making, unique to its owner, begins.

Marriage may be a little similar.

The wedding day is not the finished form. From that day onward, the relationship gradually takes shape through everyday life together.

Nor is it complete at the 10-year milestone.

The time you have shared becomes a foundation for new days to come.

New leather and tin have not yet been marked by the time of the person who uses them.

That leaves the pleasure of discovering what character they will develop in the years ahead.

Something chosen for your tin anniversary may stay with you for the next 10 years, carrying a deep sheen and scratches by the time you reach your 20th.

That does not simply mean it has grown old. It means you have spent more time together.

With gratitude for the past 10 years

The 10th wedding anniversary is a significant occasion for a couple.

But it does not require an extravagant trip or an expensive gift.

Share a meal.

Look back through old photographs.

Put into words the thanks you have not yet expressed.

And give something that can be used for years to come.

I think what matters is taking a fresh look at those 10 years.

Tin is a material that can be used for a long time, softly adapting its shape.

Even scratches become part of its character as it develops a quieter appearance over time.

Ten years of staying close and, at times, changing shape together.

The tin anniversary quietly reflects that relationship.

With gratitude for the past 10 years and thoughts of the time still to come.

Why not choose a gift of leather and tin that can remain part of everyday life for years?
